A little over 3 years ago, the stealth survival game Hello Neighbor (Free) by developer Dynamic Pixels and publisher tinyBuild was announced for mobile devices. The following July, it appeared on the App Store as a free demo with a full IAP for unlocking games. The concept and characters in Hello Neighbor received praise when it was released on consoles, PCs and mobile devices, but the controls and actual gameplay were less well received. Even so, the game proved popular and a follow-up that served as the precursor to the original game called Hello Neighbor Hide & Seek was released to all platforms including mobile in late 2018. More recently, in January this year, Hello Guest Game was released (Free) as a free teaser for the upcoming sequel Hello Neighbor 2 on mobile.
In the midst of it all, a special spin-off title called Secret Neighbor was released for consoles and PC in the fall of 2019. It’s a multiplayer-oriented version of the series’ stealth survival gameplay that takes place between the first two acts of the original Hello Neighbors. In March tinyBuild announced that Secret Neighbor would use mobile devices in addition to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions. Today you can pre-order the game in the App Store with an estimated release date next month. Here is a teaser trailer for the mobile version.
Secret Neighbor lets you play as part of a group of kids as you all band together to find enough keys to unlock the basement door where your friend is being held captive by your creepy neighbor. The twist is that one of the kids and their supposed teammates is the creepy neighbor in disguise. So while you have to communicate with other players and work cooperatively to unlock the basement, neither can you trust any of them who could possibly be the neighbor to get you out. The children win if they can unlock the door before the time runs out and the neighbor wins if they can catch all of the children before they can.
Secret Neighbor is quite a unique set of circumstances for a multiplayer game and has grown in popularity since it was first released. I think it will be interesting to see how well a mobile version fares given the successes of other unique multiplayer games like Dead by Daylight Mobile and Among Us. The iOS version of Secret Neighbor is now available for pre-order from the App Store and should be available for free for one month starting today, June 17th.
