Golden Mild’s new ‘Meat Royale’ is mainly a Silent Hill Deathmatch in David Lynch’s lavatory

Golden Light was already one of my favorite games of 2020, a horror roguelike in which shape-changing meat monsters harass each other in a dirty, surreal universe. Learn more about the base game in my impressions from last year, but also skim the Steam page. It has received a ton of updates since then, with new biomes, NPCs, balance changes, and even a co-op mode. Neato.

But the real meat (sorry) in the latest update is Meat Royale, a 10-player spin in Golden Light’s bewildering first-person battle. You and nine other players appear in a random level including meat monsters and have to do the battle royale thing and collect equipment and weapons to take out the other players.

The Golden Light is in dark, winding, crowded hallways where any object could be a monster. Some weapons are “alive” too, with strange buffs and perks that often require some sort of blood or gold sacrifice. And yes, as you may have noticed in the extremely good and weird trailer above, you can eat some guns too. Real world logic doesn’t apply to Golden Light, and learning the rules is only half the fun.

True to the spirit of the Golden Light, just like the meat monsters, you and the Meat Brothers can change shape and crouch down to take the form of a cosmetic that adorns you. Win games to earn meat crowns for more cosmetics in the meat market. Turn your head into a weapon, a computer, or even a hand. Fortnite’s skins look pretty boring now, don’t they?

You can see some of this in action above, a confusing, stressful game of cat and mouse. Battle Royale seems to be a surprisingly good match for Golden Light, however. The levels are so winding and confusing that there are plenty of opportunities for hectic car chases, clever ambushes and short vacations.

The Meat Royale update also brings some improvements to the base game, including a new helper NPC, some graphic effects, and a much higher co-op cap for 10 players. Golden Light is 25% cheaper to celebrate the big update too. So now is a good time to take a chance. $ 10 is a hell of a deal for so much meat.
