Blizzard is keen to make the three core roles (tanks, damage, and support) in Overwatch 2 a little more complex. The developer has always preferred to keep things simple for his competitive shooter (which is why you have three to four skills out of ten instead), and part of that doesn’t involve many invisible, passive skills. That could change if a recent experiment called “Role Passive” fails.
Role passives would essentially bring little benefit to any hero, depending on what role they play. Here are the examples Blizzard shared behind the scenes in today’s video:
- Tank: Recoil reduction, reduced ultimate charge for damage dealt to them
- Damage: Movement Speed Bonus
- Support: Automatic healing (active after a period of no damage)
Interesting. A boost in the speed of damage and auto-heal (at a slower rate than Mercy’s current passive heal) for assistance could be pretty transformative for the meta depending on strength. And since the suggested passives would apply equally to all heroes in any role, you wouldn’t have to memorize too much to keep track of what anyone can do.
As goes without saying for anything the Overwatch team talks about upfront, there’s a fair chance none of that will make it into the final version of Overwatch 2. Or if role passives manage to do it, don’t expect specific skills to look exactly like they do in these bullet points.
