Puzzle Quest is kind of the “granddaddy” of match-3 RPGs, and after having become a pivotal hit on portable game consoles in front of smartphones, the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in 2007, it was no surprise to see the series Make your way to the iPhone in the very early days of the App Store in December 2008. The original Puzzle Quest for iOS, while technically a good fit for the iPhone, was technically a pretty crappy port. Almost two years later, and about 6 months after launching on Xbox, Puzzle Quest 2 made it to iOS and was a much better performance than the port on the first game. Although Puzzle Quest 2 is sadly no longer available, it lived a long happy life as one of the best match-3 RPGs for mobile.
That was more than a decade ago, of course. What the hell has happened to the Puzzle Quest series since then? If you could imagine giving me a sweaty Steve Ballmer impression: spin-offs, spin-offs, spin-offs! Marvel Puzzle Quest is a free version of the formula that includes all sorts of famous faces from the Marvel universe. It was by far the most successful of the spin-off group, which was launched back in 2013 and is still going strong today. The Puzzle Quest brand has also visited the magic areas: The Gathering and Adventure Time, both with less success. We also received an improved remake of the original game for Nintendo Switch in 2019 called Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns.
With ten years in the rearview mirror since the last real Puzzle Quest entry, you might have wondered if and when another sequel would come. This question was answered today with the following teaser.
You may have seen earlier this month that the developers of the two original Puzzle Quest games, Infinity Plus 2, have been acquired by 505 Games and Puzzle Quest 3 will be the studio’s first release under its new owner. The game will be free and cross-platform. According to the project’s creator and creative director, Steve Fawkner, this new game will feature the gameplay, story, and puzzle-solving that the series is known for, as well as “something unexpected that will appeal to fans both old and new. “Story-wise Puzzle Quest 3 will take place.” 500 years after the original puzzle quest, players will take a heroic journey through Etheria to discover the meaning behind the ancient Red Dragon’s dying words. ”
Puzzle Quest 3 will be released on multiple platforms including mobile later this year. In the meantime, you can sign up for updates on the game’s official website.
